Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin d'Oradour-Fanais is a Catholic religious monument located in the commune of Oradour-Fanais, Charente (New Aquitaine). Built during the 4th quarter of the 11th century, it represents an example of early Romanesque architecture in this region of southwestern France. Its classification as a historical monument in 1921 shows its heritage importance and its preservation by the French authorities.
The Charente, a region marked at that time by feudal organization and mainly agricultural economy, saw parish churches as centres of community life. These buildings served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for the inhabitants, playing a social and political role in the villages. Their construction often reflected the local prosperity and influence of the Church in structuring rural areas.
The building was officially protected by a classification order dated August 22, 1921, making it a recognized historical monument. Today, the church belongs to the commune of Oradour-Fanais and remains a symbol of the architectural and religious heritage of the region. Its precise location, although documented, is assessed as having poor accuracy according to the heritage databases, with an approximate address indicated as 4 Rue de la Blourde.
