Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Batilly-en-Gâtinais is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the late 12th or early 13th century. It is characterized by a three-nave structure, completed by a square bedside. The two spans of the central nave, dated from this period, have double arches falling on lamp-like asses carved in the keys of the archvolts. These architectural elements bear witness to a marked Romanesque influence, although later changes have changed certain aspects of the building.
The additional spans of the naves, added later, have a typical 15th-century arc profile, reflecting an evolution towards the Gothic style. The bell tower, of Romanesque origin, has been redesigned, and traces of a larger bell tower project, with movements from the late 15th or early 16th century, are visible. The church, dedicated to St. Martin and St. Michael, was built between the end of the 13th and 14th centuries, with a tower mentioned from 1362.
The history of the church is marked by tumultuous events: looting in 1564, partial destruction of the bell tower by lightning in 1665, followed by a lower reconstruction. Between 1702 and 1704, repairs involved paving in front of the altar, in the choir and then the nave. Restorations also took place in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially for covering. The building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 6 March 1928, remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the region.
The church Saint-Martin is now owned by the municipality of Batilly-en-Gâtinais. Its state of conservation and the various restoration campaigns illustrate its heritage importance. The location of the building, specified as satisfactory, allows it to be located at the approximate address of 1 Rue du Grand Verger, in the Loiret department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
