Origin and history
The Church of Saint Martin in Biarritz is a Catholic building located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is part of the parish of Notre-Dame-du-Rocher and depends on the diocese of Bayonne. Inscribed to historical monuments since 1931, it is dedicated to Saint Martin, patron saint of Biarritz, whose parish dates back to the period of English domination. The current Romanesque building replaces a first undocumented religious building.
The church was enlarged and redesigned in 1541, as indicated by a date engraved on a pillar. Until 1894, it served as a parish church in the commune. From 1861 she underwent restorations and beautifications. In 1906, Clément Mathieu became vicar there, in a context of tensions between the Third Republic and the Church of France, before leading the seminary of Bayonne.
The church houses 18th-century wooden stalls, classified as objects since 1973. These furniture elements bear witness to its rich interior heritage, complementing its Romanesque architecture and subsequent transformations.
