Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Bourville, located in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy, is a Catholic religious building built in the 12th century. This monument illustrates the local architectural evolution, with a choir rebuilt in the seventeenth century and a nave and a porch rebuilt in the eighteenth century. These transformations reflect the liturgical and aesthetic needs of successive epochs, while maintaining an initial medieval structure.

In the 19th century, the church underwent major changes: the north arm of the transept was removed at the end of this century, while a northern chapel was added around 1885. These adjustments are likely to meet practical requirements or changes in religious practice. The building was finally listed as a historic monument on June 6, 1933, recognizing its heritage value and its role in local history.

Consisting of sandstone, tuff and various stones, the church is distinguished by its slate roof, typical of the region. Inside, a baroque master altar decorated with statues representing St. Martin and St. Victor bears witness to the artistic richness of the building. Two reliquaries, objects of devotion, are also preserved, emphasizing its spiritual importance for the community.

The location of Bourville, in the district of Dieppe, places this church in a Normandy rural context marked by an agricultural and artisanal history. Parish churches such as Saint Martin served as a gathering place, prayer and social organization, playing a central role in village life since the Middle Ages.
