Origin and history

The church of Saint Martin de Brières, located in the village of Brières (comune of Brécy-Brières, Ardennes), is a religious building built around 1540, partially rebuilt in 1893. Its modest architecture is characterized by three spans without transept, a five-sided apse, and brick walls. The door, surmounted by a steep arch and triangular pediment, reflects the stylistic influences of the Renaissance. The building was listed as historic monuments on 27 January 1928.

The adjacent cemetery houses the tomb of General Baron Veilande (died 1845), decorated with a pyramid and an epitaph of 21 lines. This soldier, commander of the Legion of Honour and former deputy of the Ardennes, illustrates the local importance of the church as a place of memory. His funeral inscription evokes his titles, including that of knight of the order of Saint-Louis, and his political commitment in the 19th century.

The church, owned by the municipality of Brécy-Brières, is part of the religious landscape of the Ardennes, marked by brick constructions typical of the region. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its heritage value, linked to its architecture and its role in local history, from the 16th century to the contemporary era. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as a protected building and its anchoring in the Ardennes territory.
