Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Brux, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 31 December 1914, is a 12th century Romanesque building located in the village of Brux, New Aquitaine. Built in the early 12th century, it retained its architectural integrity without undergoing later additions. Its plan includes a nave of two spans flanked by narrow bottoms, pillars adorned with columns, and a vault in a broken cradle for the nave, while the bottoms have arches in the middle of the arch. The steeple span, surmounted by an octagonal cupola on trompons, houses a small bay in penetration, and the sanctuary extends through a harmonious choir.

The remarkable south side door is framed by an archvolt decorated with cubic compartments. The bell tower, without archicvolt or columnettes, is distinguished by a crowlet midhorn and four bays in the middle hanger. Adorned with an alternating cordant figurative corbels, archatures and mascarons, L-abside houses inside a painted funeral liter, vestige of a seigneurial or religious past. The building, owned by the commune, illustrates the sobriety and ingenuity of the Poitou Romanesque builders.

The church of Saint Martin, with its homogeneous architecture and sculptural details, offers a rare example of preserved Poitevin Romanesque art. Its classification in 1914 underscores its heritage value, while its location in Brux (code INSEE 86039), in the former Poitou-Charentes region, makes it a historic landmark for New Aquitaine. The absence of further modifications reinforces its authenticity, allowing us to study 12th century construction techniques and aesthetic cannons in this region.
