Church: registration by decree of 23 December 1926
Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Buzet-sur-Tarn is distinguished by its military architecture, inherited from civil and religious wars. Its appearance is reminiscent of that of a castle-fort, with an apse reinforced by inner pillars encrusted in the walls. The nave, divided into four spans, houses eight chapels, two of which were walled. The polygonal sanctuary and the facade adorned with an ogival door surmounted by a gallery reinforce this defensive character.
The bell tower, located to the north, once served as a watchtower to monitor the adjacent bridge. Its massive base is 23 metres high, crowned by a belt of machicolis supported by consoles. At the top, an octagonal tower divided into three floors dominates the whole. This hybrid structure, both religious and defensive, illustrates the tensions of its time.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 December 1926, the church today belongs to the municipality of Buzet-sur-Tarn. Its location at 122 Del Pech Street and its history of religious conflicts make it a unique architectural testimony. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, and its current state allows us to appreciate its dual role, spiritual and strategic.
