Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Castres-Gironde is a Catholic building located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine. It is characterized by an architecture combining two epochs: a Romanesque apse from the 11th century and naves rebuilt in the 19th century. The present set, three-nave arched, was erected in 1867, but the original apse was preserved, bearing witness to its medieval heritage. The windows, decorated with columns, and the triple column foothills illustrate a remarkable architectural know-how for the time.

The apse of the church was classified as historical monuments by order of 10 September 1913, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This Romanesque part, later surmounted by a masonry wall to support a frame, preserves typical decorative elements, such as archvolts and crowlets. The rest of the building, rebuilt in the 19th century, reflects the stylistic and functional adaptations associated with the evolution of liturgical and community needs.

The precise location of the church is attested at 20 Rue du Général Leclerc in Castres-Gironde, in an area marked by a dense religious heritage. Although cartographic accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10), available sources, including Merimée bases and Creative Commons licensed photographs, confirm its status as communal property. No information is provided on its current accessibility or contemporary uses (visits, rentals, etc.).
