Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Champniers, located in the department of Vienna in New Aquitaine, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 12th century for the Romanesque choir, while the nave and lateral chapel date back to the 15th century. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, with a flamboyant portal adorned with polygonal capitals decorated with foliage, topped by an arch in a brace framed with pinacles. Inside, the vaults with veins in the cellar fall on capitals and caps carved of fantastic figures, typical of late Gothic art.

The church murals constitute a remarkable ensemble, divided into two distinct periods. The paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries, in the nave and the lateral chapel, depict scenes such as Hell, the Cavalcade of Capital Sins, or Saint Eloi in ironing Marshal, with dominant colors of red and yellow ochre. In the apse and the choir, 14th-century frescoes, very degraded, were restored in 1874, sometimes abusively, but allowing the partial preservation of ancient decorations. Among the illustrated themes are Christ in Majesty, St George terrorizing the dragon, or the Last Judgment, reflecting the religious and moral concerns of the medieval era.

The bell tower and the church roof were restored in the 19th century by architect S. de Mérandot, while the paintings of the choir and the abside were "refreshed" in the same period, partially altering their authenticity. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1994, the church also houses commemorative stones and contractual inscriptions from the 15th to the 18th centuries, engraved on the pillars and facade. These texts recall donations, renovations, or pious vows of parishioners, bearing witness to local community and religious life throughout the centuries.

Among the most notable frescoes, the Martyr of St Sebastian evokes the fears related to the black plague, which ravaged Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries, while St Blaise, Armenian bishop, is represented in his torture and glorification, highlighting the worship of the patron saint. The scenes of the Supper or Annunciation complete this iconographic ensemble, combining biblical accounts and popular traditions. The church, owned by the commune, remains a major testimony of art and devotion in Poitou-Charentes.

The building also preserves written traces of its history, such as a graffiti of 1716 or an inscription of the 15th century relating to works of beautification of the sanctuary. These elements, combined with frescoes and architecture, make Saint-Martin de Champniers a place of memory where sacred art, local history and medieval heritage cross.
