Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin de Chaumont-devant-Damvillers, located in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region, was built in the 2nd quarter of the 16th century. From this period there remain today the choir (dated precisely from 1531 by a key vault), the bell tower and part of the nave. These elements are the only remains of the original building, bearing witness to Renaissance religious architecture in Lorraine.
The nave was completely rebuilt in 1871 according to the plans of a diocesan architect, marking a first major transformation. During World War I (1914-1918), the church suffered serious damage, requiring rehabilitation in 1920. The restorations then concerned the bell tower and the nave, without altering the choir, protected for its heritage interest.
The choir, both inside and outside, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 16 July 1991 (cadastral reference B 48). Owned by the municipality, the church embodies both a late medieval heritage and traces of modern conflicts, while remaining a place of worship and local memory. Its exact address, 6 Grand-Rue in Chaumont-devant-Damvillers (55150), is referenced in the Merimée database under the code Insee 55107 (Meuse).
