Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin de Chipilly is located in the commune of the same name, in the department of the Somme, near to Amiens and Corbie. This place of worship, typical of Picardy religious architecture, combines elements of different periods, reflecting local evolutions.
The present building was built in 1824, but its triangular stone pediment dates back to the 18th century. This mix of styles suggests separate construction or restoration campaigns, although the precise archives are lacking to detail these interventions. The facade, sober and framed with pilasters, contrasts with the structure in red brick, material dominant in the region.
The church follows a traditional basilical plane, with a nave flanked by low-sides and a choir ending in apse in cul-de-four. The bell tower, surmounted by an arrow covered with dardoise, dominates the whole. The stained glass windows, described as modern in the sources, indicate additions or renovations after the initial construction, without specifying the exact date.
The monument is dedicated to Saint Martin, a major figure of Christianity in France, as witnessed by the homonymous churches in the region. Its location in Chipilly, rural village of Hauts-de-France, highlights its central role in local community and spiritual life, since at least the 19th century.
