Church: by decree of 20 February 1920
Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin de Cuiry-Housse is a religious building located in the village of the same name, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, it embodies the medieval architecture typical of historical Picardia. Its classification as historic monuments in 1920 reflects its heritage value and its importance to local heritage.
The monument, owned by the commune, has been fully protected since a decree of 20 February 1920. Although the available sources do not specify the details of its construction or its possible sponsors, its state of conservation and its location on 3 Rue de l'Église make it a central point of the village. The church is part of a wider network of religious buildings in Aisne, reflecting the spiritual and community role of parish churches in the Middle Ages.
At the time of its construction, between the 12th and 14th centuries, the region was marked by a mainly agricultural and artisanal economy. Churches, like Saint Martin, served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural landmarks for local populations. Their architecture often evolved according to available resources and regional stylistic influences, such as early Gothic or late Romanesque. These buildings also played a role in feudal and religious organization, strengthening links between the faithful and ecclesiastical institutions.
