Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Cuiry-lès-Iviers, located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building built mainly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is distinguished by its brick architecture, decorated with varnished brick motifs, and consists of three parts: a narrow nave, a flat bedside bell tower flanked by two asymmetric turrets, and a facade tower with murderers. This type of construction, including a shelter room on the second level of the bell tower, is characteristic of the fortified churches of Thiérache, reflecting the defensive needs of the region at that time.

The right of patronage of the parish of Saint Martin historically belonged to the chapter of Rozoy, while the revenues (dimes) were divided between this chapter, the abbey of Bonnefontaine and the abbey of Saint-Michel-en-Thiérache. In 1728, a statement attests that the cure brought back 362 pounds annually, with forty foundations of Masses to be celebrated. Rozoy's chapter owned property and received seigneurial rights, like thirteen hens a year for bourgeois rights. These elements illustrate the economic and social importance of the church in local life, as well as its anchoring in regional religious networks.

The church was included in the inventory of historical monuments by order of 9 July 1987, thus recognizing its heritage value. Its nave, rebuilt between 1690 and 1691, and its interior fittings (dallage and woodwork of the 19th century) bear witness to the architectural and liturgical evolutions that the building passed through. The presence of murderers and a shelter also reminds us of the unrest and conflicts that marked the Thierache, requiring places of worship endowed with defensive functions.
