Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Cuxac-d'Aude, mentioned in 993, is a religious building marked by a rich and complex history. It appeared in inventories of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1143 and 1145, before being assigned in 1212 by the Archbishop of Narbonne to the chapter of Saint-Just. These early traces underline its early importance in the region, linked to religious orders and local ecclesiastical structures.

The architecture of the church reflects several periods of construction and evolution. The unique nave, divided into arched bays of warheads, bears witness to a Gothic influence, while the bell tower, slightly disoriented from the 14th century nave, suggests an anteriority of its construction. In 1598, the top of the tower was surmounted by an octagonal brick arrow, a notable architectural addition. In the 18th century, the addition of the chapel of the Penitents, decorated with Baroque motifs, further enriched its heritage.

The church was classified and listed as a historical monument in 1983 and was subject to controversial restorations in the 1990s. Some modifications, such as the walling of windows or the application of a cement mortar on the arrow, have altered its architectural harmony and historical legibility. These interventions, while aimed at preserving the building, have sometimes affected its authenticity and aesthetics, raising the question of heritage conservation.

The western façade, the gate, the bell tower and the apse are classified, while the rest of the building, with the exception of the Penitent Chapel, is inscribed. These legal protections underline the heritage value of the church, while highlighting the challenges associated with its preservation. The building remains a major testimony to the religious and architectural history of Aude, from medieval times to modern times.

The Church of St Martin is also linked to the order of St John of Jerusalem, as evidenced by the ancient records in the archives of the Commandery of Narbonne. This historical link reinforces its importance in the network of religious buildings in Languedoc, marked by the presence of military and hospital orders. Today, it continues to play a role in local life, while attracting the attention of historians and heritage lovers.
