Origin and history
The church of Saint Martin de Donzenac is a Catholic building located in the municipality of Donzenac, in Corrèze, New Aquitaine. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, it is emblematic of its 55-metre high bell tower, classified as historical monuments since 1932. This square bell tower features remarkable architecture with foothills surmounted by octagonal lanterns and a stone arrow. Its vaulted porch, added in the 15th century, and its third-point bays with stained-glass windows or abs-sons testify to its heritage importance.
The bell tower is the only part of the building to retain an archaeological interest, the rest of the church being of modern construction. Inside, a painting by Claude-Noël Thévenin, painted in 1833 and entitled "The charity of Saint-Martin", adorns the place. Acquired by the government for a church in Corrèze, this painting adds an artistic dimension to the religious heritage. Between 2018 and 2020, a renovation project secured and restored the bell tower, giving the building its original brilliance.
The Church of Saint Martin is also highlighted on a collection ticket dedicated to "Donzenac - Medieval city", stressing its anchor in local history. The bell tower, with its two vaulted halls on warhead crosses and its belfry located under the arrow, illustrates medieval architectural techniques. Its classification in 1932 and its representation on cultural media make it a symbol of the Correzian heritage.
The location of the church, at 22 Rue Marcel Lagane in Donzenac, is specified in the Mérimée base, with an Insee code (19072) linking the commune to the district of Tulle. Although geographical accuracy is considered "passable" (note 5/10), its address and history make it a major point of interest for visitors and lovers of religious architecture.
