Origin and history
The Saint-Martin de Fontaines-d'Ozillac Church is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of the same name in Charente-Maritime (New Aquitaine). It is characterized by a hybrid architecture, mixing Romanesque and Renaissance elements. On the left, its composite façade has a Romanesque portal with three windows and two blind bays, topped by five Romanesque arches on double columns. On the right, a Renaissance part includes a low gate and a large shell of Santiago, a symbol typical of pilgrimage paths.
The bell tower, of square shape and without marked style, is covered with a pyramid of slate. The building was classified as historic monuments in 2002, recognizing its heritage value. This official protection underlines the importance of its conservation for the regional architectural heritage.
The church is part of the religious landscape of Charente-Maritime, where parish churches played a central role in community life. These buildings served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural landmarks for the inhabitants. Their architecture often reflects stylistic evolutions and local influences throughout the centuries.
