Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Heilles, located in the Oise department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a parish Catholic building dating back to the Middle Ages. Its central bell tower, Romanesque style, dates from the first half of the 12th century, although its base was taken up as a sub-work in the mid-16th century, thus losing its original Romanesque character. This modification allowed the creation of Berrichons passages, a rare architectural feature in the area, directly linking the transept crucifixes to the nave and choir.

The choir, rebuilt in the 13th century in a sober, radiant Gothic style, is distinguished by its capitals and uncarved vault keys, reflecting an economy of means typical of small rural churches. The transept, probably built shortly after the chorus, was never vaulted on the roof, while the nave, also of the thirteenth century, retains its original walled ceiling. The crucifixes, which were largely remodelled in the 19th and 20th centuries, present neo-Gothic elements, especially in the north crucifix, rebuilt in 1855.

The church was listed as historical monuments by order of 12 August 1993. Today, affiliated with the parish of Sainte-Claire de Mouy, she welcomes Sunday Masses only a few times a year on Saturday evening. Its furniture includes several classified or inscribed pieces, including a 16th century statue of Christ and a bronze bell of 1753, bearing witness to its rich historical and artistic heritage.

The bell tower, the oldest part of the building, features Romanesque vaulted capitals and a beautiful cornice, characteristic of the early twelfth century. Its belfry floor, soberly decorated, resembles other bell towers of the Oise like those of Catenoy or Chamant. Subsequent changes, including the revival of the bell tower base in the 16th century, illustrate the architectural transitions between flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance.

The interior of the church reveals a unique un vaulted nave, typical of the small rural churches of the area, with arcades blocked on the north wall, remains of an ancient side. The Berrichons passages, although redesigned, remain a remarkable architectural element, directly linking the crucifixes to the nave and the choir. The choir, although without carved decoration, is a rare example of the application of the style radiating in a rural context, with a seven-paned apse and rudimentary reamping windows.

The outside of the church, marked by a modern porch and a sober western facade, fits harmoniously into the landscape of the Therain Valley. The bell tower, with a dardian pyramid, dominates the building and recalls the Romanesque architectural traditions of the region. Humidity problems, linked to the topography of the site, required regular interventions to preserve this unique medieval heritage.
