Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin de La Croix-du-Perche, located in the Eure-et-Loir department, is a religious building whose unique nave and semi-circular apse date back to the 12th century. Originally chapel of a priory founded around 1250 by the Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Tiron, it became parish after the departure of the monks at the end of the sixteenth century. Its sober architecture, without sideways, reflects its initial use as a place of monastic worship before its transformation into a communal church.
The 16th-century frame, entirely panelled in a cradle and decorated with paintings dated 1537, is the most remarkable element of the monument. These decorations, combining characters and geometric patterns, cover the panels of the nave and apse. In the 15th century, changes were made, including the addition or transformation of windows in the nave. A framed arrow, supported by six interior posts, surmounts the western part of the building, adding to its unique architectural character.
Classified as a historic monument in 1934, Saint Martin's church illustrates the evolution of rural places of worship, from monastic use to parish function. Today owned by the commune of La Croix-du-Perche, it is part of the parish of Saint-Lubin du Perche and the dean of Perche. Its classification reflects the heritage value of its painted frame, a rare example of provincial Renaissance religious art.
