Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin de Lamnay, located in the Sarthe department in Pays de la Loire, is a Catholic religious building whose origins date back to at least the tenth century, with a mention around 969. The current rectangular church was built mainly in the 16th and 17th centuries. It consists of a nave of four spans extended by a choir with a flat bedside of two spans, covered with a bay panel and arched with warheads. A three-span collateral, also arched with warheads, was added in the 16th century to the northwest, adjacent to a three-storey square tower. This monument illustrates the architectural evolution of the rural churches of the region, mixing late Gothic elements and later adaptations.
A commemorative wall painting, dated 1612, adorns the pillar between the choir and the first span of the collateral. She paid tribute to the parish priest Lemaçon, who had contributed to the beautification of the building at that time. This wall decoration is a rare testimony of local artistic and religious practices in the early 17th century. The church, owned by the municipality of Lamnay, was listed as historic monuments by order of 24 February 1994, thereby recognizing its heritage and architectural value.
The building is part of the religious and social landscape of the Sarthe, an area marked by a strong presence of parish churches from the Middle Ages. These buildings served not only as places of worship but also as community centres, hosting gatherings, celebrations and collective decisions. The church of Saint-Martin, with its characteristic bell tower, probably played a central role in the life of the village of Lamnay, rhythmizing daily activities and religious holidays. Its architecture reflects the resources and know-how available in a rural area, where churches were often built and embellished with donations from parishioners and local notables.
