Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Malaumont, located in the municipality of Chonville-Malaumont (Meuse, Grand Est), is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the 12th century. The bell tower, characteristic of this Romanesque period, dominates the ensemble, while the choir, rebuilt in the 13th century, illustrates the transition to Gothic style. The nave, enhanced in the 15th century, reflects the defensive needs of the time, probably serving as a refuge for the local population.

Sacristy, backed by the 16th century, completes this composite architectural ensemble, showing stylistic and functional evolutions over nearly five centuries. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1908 for its bell tower, the church saw its choir, nave and sacristy inscribed in 1994, highlighting its heritage value. Owned by the commune, it embodies both the religious heritage and the defensive history of medieval and modern Lorraine.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its role in the local cultural landscape, with references to specialized databases such as Mérimée or the Observatory of Religious Heritage. Its precise address, 3 Rue de l'Église Romane, and its Insee code (55114) firmly anchor this monument in the territory of the Meuse, between Bar-le-Duc and the rural landscapes of the Great East.
