Origin and history

The church of Saint Martin de Mont-Saint-Martin was first mentioned in 1096, marking its existence in the Middle Ages. It was entirely rebuilt around the middle of the 12th century, then vaulted or recast around 1200, reflecting the Romanesque architectural developments. At that time, she was associated with a Benedictine priory, dependent on the abbey of Saint-Vanne de Verdun, highlighting her spiritual and community role in the region.

In 1599 the priory was ceded to the Jesuits of Verdun, marking a change in religious management. The building underwent a major reconstruction in 1753, as evidenced by the date on its structure, followed by modifications in the 19th century, including the addition of a sacristy. These transformations illustrate its adaptation to liturgical needs and successive architectural styles, from baroque to modern times.

Ranked a historic monument in 1889, the church benefited from several significant restoration campaigns: between 1895 and 1904 under the direction of architects of the Historic Monuments such as Schuler and Louzier, and in 1928 for work on the tower. Disused in 1929 for the benefit of Saint-Barthélémy Church, she kept the stained glass windows of J. Benoît installed that same year, bearing witness to her artistic and religious heritage.

Its history reflects local dynamics, from its medieval anchor to its decline in the 20th century, through its role in Lorrain monastic networks. Repeated restorations highlight its heritage importance, despite its subsequent decommissioning.
