Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Montcornet, located in the Aisne department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a remarkable building built between the thirteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It illustrates the architectural transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles, with a Greek cross shape and eight turrets giving it a strong castle look. Its sculpted Gothic portal and its arrow destroyed in 1574 testify to its rich past. Some historians refer to possible construction by the Templars, although no definitive evidence attests.

Before the Revolution, the patronage of the cure belonged to the chapter of St.Lawrence of Rozoy, while the church property was sold as national property. During the First World War, the building suffered heavy damage: its stained glass windows, bells and organs were dismantled or destroyed between 1917 and 1918, notably by the German authorities. A bell, miraculously intact after its fall in 1918, was resettled after the war. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1911, the church now maintains a model illustrating its complex architecture.

Inside the church houses decorative elements that disappeared during the war, such as chandeliers, candelabras and liturgical objects of metal, looted or melted. Despite these losses, the building remains a symbol of local religious and historical heritage, marked by the conflicts of the twentieth century. Its history also reflects the upheavals of the Revolution and wars, while emphasizing its central role in the community of Montcornet since the Middle Ages.
