Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Nod-sur-Seine, located in Burgundy-Franche-Comté in the Côte-d-Or department, is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the thirteenth century. The choir, the forerunner and the base of the bell tower, built in stone and stone, bear witness to this medieval period. These architectural elements, characteristic of late Romanesque or early Gothic art, form the historical core of the monument.

The nave, bell tower berry and doric porch were added or reworked between 1732 and 1787, reflecting the stylistic evolutions of the 18th century. This work campaign, marked by the addition of a western gate preceded by a classical porch, illustrates the adaptation of the church to the tastes of modern times, while maintaining its medieval structure. The roofs covered with flat tiles and the square arrow of the bell tower also date from this period.

The interior of the church houses remarkable furniture, including a polychrome wooden statuary from the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the notable pieces are representations of the Virgin with the Child, of the Education of the Virgin, as well as statues of St Martin, St John the Baptist and St Peter. These works, typical of the Catholic devotion of the Old Regime, highlight the spiritual and artistic role of the building over the centuries.

Consisting of a single vaulted nave and a flat bedside pierced by a window, the church features an elongated plan typical of small rural churches. The massive bell tower, with an external staircase, dominates the village and serves as a visual landmark. This mixture of medieval and classical elements makes Saint Martin a representative example of Burgundy's religious heritage, marked by centuries of local history.

The central location of the church in the village of Nod-sur-Seine reinforces its importance as a place of community gathering and cultural practice. Since the Middle Ages, this type of building has played a key role in the social and religious life of the countryside, serving both as a sacred space and as an identity symbol for the inhabitants.
