Origin and history
The Saint-Martin de Parsac church, located in the commune of Parsac-Rimondeix (Creuse department, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region), is a religious building dating back to the late 11th or early 12th century. Only the two spans of the choir, marked by a slightly broken triumphal arch resting on carved capitals (foliations to the south, characters and tree of life to the north), bear witness to this Romanesque period. The rest of the structure, probably rebuilt in the 19th century, contrasts with these medieval elements.
The building, including its partial painted decoration (polychrome geometrical motifs visible under a bay of the choir), was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 27 November 1989. This classification also protects notable furniture elements, such as a wooden statue of St.Madeleine (XVI century) or a monumental 19th-century altarpiece (7.10 m high), reflecting subsequent additions and transformations. The double credence in the middle, located in the first span of the choir, also illustrates the medieval liturgical use of the place.
Historically, the church was a priory-cured whose patronage was successively the prevoût of Evaux (17th century) and then the Sainte-Chapelle de Riom. This institutional evolution is part of the religious reforms and ecclesiastical reorganizations of the Old Regime. The sculpted capitals, notably the one representing a tree of life framed by characters, suggest a complex Christian symbolism, typical of limousine Romanesque art.
The protected furniture also includes a Christ on the Cross (probably 17th century), a statue of St.Martin (17th or 18th century), as well as two stone sculptures: a Virgin with the Child and a Pietà, both dated from the 16th century. These objects, registered between 1973 and 1979, bear witness to the artistic richness of the building throughout the centuries. The precise address (2 Rue de l'Eglise, 23140 Parsac-Rimondeix) and its Insee code (23149) anchor the monument in the Creus territory.
Architecturally, the contrast between the Romanesque (chœur) and 19th-century reconstructions (nef, furniture) offers a characteristic example of the adaptations of rural churches to changing liturgical and aesthetic needs. The location in the north of the town of Parsac, within a department marked by a dense religious heritage, reinforces its historical and tourist interest.
