Origin and history

The Saint-Martin de Pouillon church, located in the Landes in New Aquitaine, is an emblematic monument dating back to the 11th century, as evidenced by an engraved dedication discovered in 1855. This Latin inscription, partially modified in the 16th century, evokes the consecration of the altar by a bishop named Raimond, probably Raimond the Old around 1025. The building, marked by primitive Romanesque architecture, was then enriched with absidioles in the 12th century and fortified in the 14th century during the Hundred Years' War, with defensive elements such as archetroles and a round path.

The modifications continued in the 16th and 17th centuries, after probable destruction during the Wars of Religion, with the reconstruction and the dogive vault of the nave and collateral, financed by the jurats of the parish and local lords. In the 18th century the Mazetti brothers realized the high altar, while in the 19th century the architect Loupot added two spans and a stone bell tower. The modern stained glass windows, created by Mr Letienne after the cartons of Mrs Blanc-Subes, add a colourful touch to the building, classified as a historical monument in 1996.

The church bedside, Romanesque-inspired, is singularized by a semicircular apse flanked by absidioles with flat exterior walls, a rare arrangement in the area. Inside, the cul-de-four vaults and deciduous capitals contrast with the Gothic nave, covered with dogive crosses. The organ, built between 1975 and 1977 by Pesce factors, completes this architectural and artistic heritage.

The history of the church is also linked to religious conflicts: Raimond the Old, bishop accused of simony and defeated by the pope in 1058, would have been erased from local memory by an inscription apocryphal added by the monks of Cagnotte in the 16th century. These historical strata, from Romanesque origins to Gothic and modern additions, make Saint-Martin a privileged witness to the architectural and spiritual evolution of the South-West.

Pouillon, a stage on a secondary route of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, illustrates by this church the role of religious buildings in welcoming pilgrims and structuring medieval communities. The fortifications of the 14th century also reflect the tensions of the Hundred Years War, while subsequent reconstructions show the resilience of the Land parishes to conflict.
