Church of Raillicourt: inscription by decree of 11 October 1930

Key figures

Franot - Craft sculptor Author of the statue of Saint Hubert (XVIIIth).

Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Raillicourt, located in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region, is distinguished by a composite architectural structure. The nave, divided into two parts, consists of a narrow ceiling section supported by diaphragm arches, followed by a vaulted span flanked by collaterals. The transept, vaulted with ribs falling into penetration, and the three-part choir testify to Gothic influences. Outside, the tympanum of the western gate features a floral sculpture, while inside, a marble master altar decorated with Corinthian columns, as well as 18th-century statues (child's vierge and Saint Hubert, carved by artisan Franot) enrich the furniture. Traces of murals also remain, adding to its artistic heritage.

The south arm of the transept, dated 1565, is the oldest element accurately identified. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of October 11, 1930, recognizing its heritage value. The location of the church, at the western end of the village of Raillicourt (rue de l'Église), and its belonging to the commune (code Insee 08352) anchor this monument in the historical landscape of the Ardennes. Bibliographical references, such as the works of Patrick Demouy or Hubert Collin, highlight his integration into regional religious history, between Maas and Aisne.

The church's furniture and architecture reflect distinct epochs, from the 16th century for the structure to Baroque additions from the 17th and 18th centuries. The statues of the Virgin with the Child and Saint Hubert, typical of local devotion, illustrate the religious crafts of the modern era. The inscription of the historic monuments in 1930 allowed the preservation of this building, whose property belongs to the commune. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its status as a protected heritage, open to the visit according to the communal modalities.
