Origin and history
Saint-Martin de Sains-Richaumont Church is a Romanesque religious monument built in the 12th century. Its origin dates back to 1161, when it was built under the impetus of René de Guise. This building, typical of medieval architecture, reflects the techniques and spiritual needs of the time in the Hauts-de-France region.
In the 19th century, faced with the population growth of Sains-Richaumont, the church proved too small to gather all the inhabitants. In 1884, the architect Hippolyte Bulteau was entrusted with its enlargement, marking an adaptation of the historical heritage to local developments. This work illustrates the desire to preserve the place while meeting the practical needs of the community.
Located in the lower village of Sains-Richaumont, in the department of Aisne, this church embodies both a medieval heritage and a living history, linked to the social and architectural transformations of the region. Its location and successive modifications testify to its central role in religious and collective life since the Middle Ages.
