Origin and history

Saint-Martin's church in Saint-Martin-des-Bois, listed as a Historic Monument, depended in the 12th century on the Abbey of Saint-Georges. It is distinguished by a nave preceded by a 16th century porch, as well as an angeline-style flat-side choir, accompanied by a bell tower and a chapel to the south, dated from the 14th or 15th centuries. The western portal and choir date back to the late 12th or early 13th century.

In 1977, murals were discovered in the building, depicting historiated scenes probably made in the 14th century. These artistic elements add a major heritage dimension to the church, reflecting the medieval religious art of the region.

The church, which has been fully protected since a decree of 21 December 2007, is now owned by the commune of Saint-Martin-des-Bois. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque and Gothic influences, typical of the stylistic transitions of the medieval period in the Centre-Val de Loire.
