Origin and history

The Church of St.Martin of Sajas, located in the village of the same name in Occitanie, dates from the 13th century. This historic monument underwent several repair and modification campaigns between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The most notable works concerned the bell tower, restored in 1896, as well as the porch and side façade in 1882. The inner gallery was also redesigned in 1887. These interventions reflect a desire to preserve and adapt the building to the needs of the time, while retaining medieval architectural elements such as the ogival gate, probably retouched several times.

The church bell tower is distinguished by its fortified structure, characteristic of the religious buildings of this region. It has a series of four openings of different sizes, aligned on the same line, and is framed by two crenellated square turrets. These defensive elements suggest an adaptation to local protection needs, possibly related to the disturbances or conflicts of the medieval era. Two full arches juxtaposed support a gallery connecting the turrets, adding an aesthetic and functional dimension to the ensemble.

The Saint Martin church has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1953, with a specific protection for its bell tower. This status reflects its heritage importance and the recognition of its architectural peculiarities. Today, the building belongs to the municipality of Sajas and remains a symbol of the religious and historical heritage of the Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region.
