Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Sussargues was built between 919 and 925 with the construction of a first building. The 11th and 12th centuries marked a probable partial reconstruction, incorporating elements of re-use in a single nave with flat bedside. This local pre-Romane phase is distinguished by a false plaster vault, typical of the regional techniques of the period.
In the 4th quarter of the 17th century, major changes took place: the addition of a bell tower, the construction of the cure and its dependencies. These adjustments reflect the evolution of liturgical and community needs. The 19th century brought a modernization with the opening of the large northern gate, while a lateral chapel, probably from the 18th century, completed the whole.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1977, the church illustrates the superposition of the epochs, from medieval origins to Baroque and neoclassical reshuffles. Its location in Sussargues (Herault), Occitanie, makes it a witness to the architectural and religious dynamics of Languedoc, between local tradition and external influences.
