Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Thiézac, located in the Cantal region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, has its origins at the end of the 15th century. Originally a priory, in 1315 it depended on the abbey of Aurillac, before being attached to the chapter of the cathedral of Clermont. Its architecture reflects this double monastic and parish influence, with a nave flanked by side chapels and a polygonal apse choir, typical of the religious buildings of this period.

The church porch, decorated with a carved cap representing a human mask, was modified or rebuilt in the 18th century, incorporating more recent stylistic elements. In 1825, the roof was completely rebuilt according to the plans of architect Lacaze, while the interior vault was renovated in 1929. These transformations illustrate the continuous evolution of the building, adapted to the liturgical needs and architectural standards of each era.

Ranked among historical monuments by decree of 26 December 1976, the church is distinguished by its Gothic portal with broken arch, supported by prismatic columns. This portal, framed by pilasters and surmounted by an archvolt in braid, bears witness to medieval craftsmanship. The bell tower, located in the north, completes a building marked by almost six centuries of religious and local history.

The church also houses remarkable elements, such as Christ sitting, studied in 1932 by F. Peschaud in the Revue de la Haute-Auvergne. This furniture heritage, combined with architecture, highlights the central role of the building in the spiritual and cultural life of Thiézac, from its monastic origin to its contemporary parish use.
