Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Truyes, located in the Indre-et-Loire department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, replaces a missing Carolingian building. Its oldest parts, such as the vaulted nave in the middle of the hangar, date from the late 11th or early 12th century. The later choir and the stone arrow of the bell tower, added in the 15th century, illustrate successive architectural developments. A side chapel was built in the 16th century, enriching the whole.

The bell tower, an emblematic element of the church, has been classified as historical monuments since 1908. He was the subject of several restorations, notably in 1890 and 1981. The nave, composed of three spans, has double arches resting on square pillars, while the choir ends with a cul-de-four apse. The facade, pierced by a broken arched door, probably dates from the 15th century.

The church preserves remarkable stained glass windows, including a representative of Saint Martin's Charity (1878, by L. Duclos) and another illustrating Saint Martin's Mass (1880, Lobin de Tours workshops). These artistic elements, combined with Romanesque and Gothic architecture, testify to its historical and religious importance. In the 21st century, it remained an active place of worship within the parish of Saint-Brice in the Indre Valley.

Moisture problems, reported in 2016, were partly attributed to recent developments in the adjacent square. These contemporary challenges recall the need to preserve this heritage, linked to an ancient path along Indre, perhaps of ancient origin. The church is one of the 3,700 French buildings dedicated to Saint Martin, highlighting its roots in local and regional history.

A charter by Cormery (860) attests to the existence of a first church in Truyes, dedicated to Saint Martin from the early Middle Ages. This primitive building, described as a "long-standing building", was then endowed with land taken from neighbouring estates. This historical mention confirms the seniority of the religious site, long before the construction of the present church.
