Origin and history
Saint-Martin-de-Vertou de Saché is a parish church dedicated to the Catholic cult, located in the municipality of Saché, in Indre-et-Loire. Built mainly in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was enlarged in the 15th century by a north side nave, then in the 16th century by a seigneurial chapel to the south. Its bell tower, dating back to the 12th century, preserves Romanesque architectural elements, such as mouldings and a turret primer with a stone staircase.
The building underwent major changes, especially when the lateral nave was added, which changed its interior. The west facade is extended by a carpentry porch, ancient period. The church was restored in 1870 and listed as a historical monument on 12 March 1935. Today it belongs to the municipality of Saché and remains an architectural testimony of stylistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
The church is dedicated to Martin de Vertou, a local saint whose cult has marked the region. Its plan reflects the successive adaptations, with a large Romanesque nave, a Gothic collateral and a chapel added to the Renaissance. The Romanesque remains in the bell tower and subsequent modifications illustrate its complex history, linked to the religious and seigneurial life of Saché.
Available sources, such as the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its inscription as historical monuments and specify its exact address: 7 Rue Principale, in Saché. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not detailed, but its heritage role remains recognized in the Indre-et-Loire department.
