Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin-de-Vertou de Varennes-sur-Loire, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire in the Pays de la Loire region, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. Its bell tower, characteristic of this Romanesque period, is the oldest element still visible today. The church is part of a landscape marked by medieval religious constructions, reflecting the importance of Christianity in the social and spiritual organization of Anjou at that time.
Over the centuries, the church has experienced several major construction and transformation campaigns. At the end of the 15th century (circa 1490), the 4th and 5th spans of the north side were built, followed in 1515 by the construction of the south side, whose dates are engraved in the stone. The choir and the foreground span, begun in 1516 and completed in 1518, illustrate the gradual adoption of the flamboyant Gothic style. The nave, originally covered with a panel in 1520, was blessed on October 16 of the same year, marking a key milestone in the history of the monument. Work continued in the 16th century with the vaulting of spans and structural redevelopments.
The 19th century brought significant changes under the impetus of architects Daviau and Roffay. In 1880, the pillars of the nave were redone, the panelling destroyed to give way to 16th-century inspired vaults, and the frames and roofs were renovated. The three gables on the west facade are also rebuilt, partially modernizing the building while maintaining its historic character. These interventions demonstrate a desire to preserve, but also to adapt to the architectural norms of the time.
Ranked among the historical monuments since 26 October 1972, the church Saint-Martin-de-Vertou today belongs to the commune of Varennes-sur-Loire. Its inclusion in the heritage inventory underlines its architectural and historical value, while offering a tangible testimony to the stylistic and technical changes that occurred between the Middle Ages and the modern era in Anjou.
