Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin de Villers-Hélon, located in the Aisne department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. It underwent major transformations in the 15th century, including the reconstruction of the choir and transept, as well as changes in the nave. These works have introduced Gothic elements, such as warheads covering the choir and transept, while the lower sides are equipped with panelling along the slope of the roof. A staircase turret, with a polygonal limestone roof, completes the architectural ensemble.
From the original 12th century building, only part of the facade remains, bearing witness to its Romanesque heritage. At the beginning of the 16th century, the choir and transept were rebuilt, and the nave was transformed to adapt to the liturgical and aesthetic evolutions of the time. A sacristy was probably added in the early eighteenth century, as indicated by a graffiti dated 1749. The church also suffered significant damage during the First World War, requiring further restoration of the nave.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 12 August 1921, Saint-Martin Church is now owned by Villers-Hélon. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, reflecting the different periods of its construction and subsequent interventions. The site is referenced in the Mérimée base, and its exact address is 1 Grand-Rue, 02600 Villers-Hélon.
