Saint Martin - Apostle of the Gauls and the North Boss of Vimy Church.

Origin and history

Saint Martin de Vimy Church is a Catholic church located in Pas-de-Calais, dedicated to Saint Martin, the Apostle of Gauls and the North. It is part of the parish of Saint-Benoît-Labre-en-Artois, attached to the diocese of Arras. Its architecture reflects a mixture of styles, with a marked neo-Gothic influence, while integrating regional elements.

The present building was rebuilt in the 1920s to replace the previous church, destroyed by shells during the First World War. Like the rest of the city of Vimy, it suffered major damage during the conflict, requiring complete reconstruction. Its bell tower, flanked by a hexagonal tower, and its roses at the ends of the transept are notable architectural features.

Built in reinforced concrete, a modern technique for the era, the church imitates the appearance of the stone with its high arrow. The nave, wide and separated from the lower side by Gothic columns, still hosts Sunday Masses, celebrated every other Sunday. This monument demonstrates the resilience of the local community after the destruction of the war.
