Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin de Viviers-lès-Montagnes, located in the Tarn in Occitanie, has its origins in the fourth quarter of the 14th century, when a first fortified building was built. From that time, the bedside and portal remain today. This monument initially depended on the Cathédral chapter of Castres, stressing its religious and institutional importance in the region. The architectural influences of this period, especially Gothic, are found in the flamboyant filling windows, decorated with bellows and speckled motifs, still visible.
Most of the nave and several side chapels were built in the 16th century, reflecting a significant expansion or renovation of the church. These additions reflect the evolution of the liturgical and community needs of Viviers-lès-Montagnes during the Renaissance. The 17th century does not seem to have left any major traces in the structure, but subsequent changes, such as the bell tower and porch, actually date back to the 19th century. These elements, while later, integrate into the history of the monument as adaptations to the aesthetic and functional norms of their time.
The church was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 30 August 1995, recognizing its heritage value. The 19th-century restorations, carried out notably by the architect Bodin-Legendre, modified certain aspects of the building, such as the bell tower, while preserving medieval and reborn elements. Today, the monument remains the property of the commune and illustrates the historical strata of Viviers-lès-Montagnes, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
