Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin du Cateau-Cambrésis is the only vestige of the former Benedictine abbey Saint-André, located in the Northern department. It was built according to the plans of Brother Jean Du Blocq of the Society of Jesus, during two distinct campaigns: the nave and the facade between 1634 and 1635, and the choir and transept at the hinge of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its architecture reflects a stylistic transition between late Renaissance and emerging classicism.

The facade, carved by Jaspard Marsy, embodies northern manerism with its volutes, adorned friezes and pots of fire. The bulb bell tower, added around 1680, crowns this Baroque ensemble. Inside, the sculptures of Marsy (nef) interact with those of the brothers Froment (choir), while the rostrum of the great organs, the work of Boittaux (early 18th), bears witness to an amazing decor. The building, a communal property, has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1909.

The decorative abundance of St. Martin illustrates the influence of local Cambreian workshops, where Gothic traditions and Baroque innovations combine. The ongoing restoration of the organ gallery underlines the desire to preserve this heritage, symbol of the artistic vitality of French Flanders under the Ancien Régime.
