Origin and history

The Church of Saint Martin of Nizan is a Catholic building located in the department of Gironde, in the town of Nizan. Originally built in the 11th century, it preserves from this period a semicircular apse and a vaulted choir in cradle, characteristic of Romanesque architecture. These elements, inscribed in historical monuments by order of October 5, 1925, are decorated with superimposed archatures resting on carved capitals, bearing witness to medieval craftsmanship.

In the 16th century, the church underwent notable enlargements, including the addition of a south side vaulted with ridges and illuminated by ogival windows. The present nave seems to have retained the dimensions of the primitive Romanesque nave, while the south wall was replaced by cylindrical drums supporting the arches of the lower side. The western façade, with a multi-sprung portal, features 14th century stylistic elements, with grotesque capitals typical of the Renaissance.

The building, owned by the commune, remains a notable example of architectural evolution, mixing Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance influences. Its square bell tower and adjacent cemetery underline its central role in the religious and community life of Nizan since the Middle Ages.
