Origin and history
Saint-Martin de Fromental Church, located in Haute-Vienne (New Aquitaine), is a Catholic building marked by a tumultuous history. Originally looted and burned by the English in 1358, it was rebuilt in 1361, before being completely rebuilt in the late eighteenth century. Today, this monument preserves painted decorations from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as remarkable furniture elements such as modern stained glass windows or a statue of Joan of Arc.
The church was listed as a historic monument on 13 February 2017, recognizing its heritage value. Its bell tower was recently under construction, with the relocation of a bell in December 2024. The stained glass windows, including one signed by Francis Chigot (1955), and the interior paintings bear witness to his artistic evolution throughout the centuries. Owned by the municipality, it remains a place of worship and local memory.
The furniture also includes two stained glass windows offered by the Morel de Fromental family, representing Saint-Martial and Sainte-Valérie, as well as a wooden choir fence overhanged by a statue of Jeanne d'Arc. These elements highlight the link between the building, the religious history of the region, and the local families that contributed to its beautification.
Architecturally, the church is distinguished by its central location in Fromental, opposite the castle, at the crossroads of rue Jean Cacaud. Its plan and interior decorations, preserved in spite of centuries, make it a representative example of the limousine religious heritage, between medieval heritage and modern transformations.
