Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Sargé-sur-Braye, located in the Loir-et-Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a religious building dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Its initial plan, characterized by a rectangular nave and a narrow chorus with flat bedside, reveals early architectural traces such as elongated stones and a window with harpsichords. These elements, as well as the chamfered imposts at the entrance of the choir, bear witness to a high medieval construction, probably prior to the 12th century, when modifications were made.

In the 16th century, the church took on its present appearance with the addition of striking stylistic elements: a flamboyant flamboyant bay typical of late Gothic, a door decorated with pilasters and Renaissance frontons, as well as a panel with apparent entrances and punches, carved and painted with arabesques. The nave also preserves traces of 14th century murals, highlighting the building's progressive decorative richness. Ranked a historical monument by decree of 21 June 1958, the church now belongs to the commune and illustrates the local architectural evolution, from the primitive novel to the Renaissance.

The building is distinguished by its mixed apparatus, where remains of the Xth–XI centuries and later additions are found. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be mediocre (level 5/10), and its official address, registered in the Mérimée base, corresponds to 9 Rue de Saint-Martin. Although communal property, information on its current accessibility (visits, events) is not detailed in the available sources. Its ranking among the historical monuments of Loir-et-Cher makes it a major heritage witness of the region.
