Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin, located in Aubigny-les-Pothées in the department of Ardennes (Great East region), was built in 1851, during the second half of the nineteenth century. It is distinguished by its out-of-work bell tower, whose base serves as the entrance porch, and by a marble paved choir. The interior walls are decorated with polychrome paintings, reflecting the religious crafts of the time.
In 1914, during World War I, the building briefly served as a military hospital, illustrating its role in community life during conflicts. The church was listed as historic monuments on October 9, 2019, recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune and is located on Rue de l'Eglise, in the heart of the village.
Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, confirm its status as a protected monument and describe its architecture typical of 19th century rural churches. Its recent inscription underlines the importance of preserving this local heritage, a witness to the religious and social history of the Ardennes.
