Origin and history
The Saint-Maur church of Saint-Maur, classified as a Historical Monument, has traces of a very ancient religious occupation. The first bay on the left could be a vestige of a church of the 10th century, and archives attest to its existence as early as 1133, even 1054, linked to a donation of the chapter of Saint-Étienne de Besançon. The nave, largely preserved, dates mainly from the 11th century, with the exception of the vault of the central ship, rebuilt later. These novel elements testify to the early importance of this place of worship in the region.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone several major changes. The right side door, added at the beginning of the 16th century, marks a first phase of modifications. In 1591, the bell tower was remodeled, and its door included a lintel with a brace dating back to 1726, illustrating the reuse of architectural elements. The choir and vault of the central ship, rebuilt in the seventeenth century, reflect a desire to adapt to the liturgical styles and needs of the era. These successive works show a constant evolution, mixing medieval heritage and Renaissance or classical additions.
The 18th and 19th centuries also left their mark on the monument. A foothill is 1748, while in 1865-1866 the architect Achilles Paillot oversees important works: construction of the sacristy, overhaul of the bedside window, opening of five windows in the lower side, and reconstruction of the exterior staircase of the bell tower. These interventions, combined with the church's inscription as a Historic Monument in 1934, underline its lasting role in the local heritage and its adaptation to successive periods.
