Origin and history

The church of Saint-Maurice de Crissay-sur-Manse, classified as a Historic Monument, is distinguished by its flamboyant Gothic architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its nave, composed of a main three-spaned vaulted ship, reflects the art of the period. The choir, illuminated by a flamboyant reamped bay, has a multi-ribed vault, while the square bell tower, with buttresses, is surmounted by a polygonal stone arrow completed in 1527.

The building was built by James I and James II Turpin, lords of Crissé, on the remains of a Romanesque church whose north wall of the north crusillon remains. An inscription in the bell tower, dated 1527, attests to the work of artisans Colin Durand and Jehan Oger for the production of the "lead clochier". The arrow, meanwhile, bears the engraved date of its completion. The church underwent major restorations in the 19th century, notably by Abbé Brisécier in 1867, including the repair of the structure and vaults.

The prominent architectural elements include the north vaulted chapel, the polygonal turret with a stone screw staircase, and the covered roofs of the slate, with the exception of the bell tower. Registration for Historic Monuments in 1926 underscores its heritage value. A communal property, the church remains a witness to the constructive techniques of the 15th and 16th centuries in Touraine.
