Origin and history
The church of Saint-Maurice de Darnets, located in the Corrèze department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. At that time, it initially consisted of a unique nave, completed by a three-sided choir, with an apse, a northern facade and a late Romanesque portal, sheltered under a porch. These elements, characteristic of the late twelfth century, bear witness to its anchoring in the medieval religious architecture of the region.
At the beginning of the 15th century, the church underwent major structural changes. The south wall, weakened by the thrust of a vault probably in a full-cindered cradle, collapses, leading to the reconstruction of the current vault. It was also during this period that a bell tower with two arches was erected on the facade, while two chapels forming a transept, as well as side chapels, were added. These transformations reflect the evolution of architectural techniques and liturgical needs between the Middle Ages and the end of the Gothic period.
The building preserves traces of painted decorations made between the second half of the 15th and 17th centuries, illustrating its artistic enrichment over the centuries. The vault of the nave, choir and chapels was rebuilt between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, while later works, such as the resumption of the bell tower and cover in the 19th century, attest to continuous maintenance. Ranked a historic monument in 1923, the church also houses a polychrome cemetery cross, protected with the building, highlighting its heritage and cultural importance for the commune of Darnets.
