Origin and history
The church Saint-Maurice de Lavoûte-sur-Loire is a Catholic building located in the Haute-Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is a typical example of a 12th century rural church in the Velay, with architectural elements dating also from the 15th and 19th centuries. The priory of Lavoûte, associated with this church, was given to the Abbey of Tournus before 1120, which marked its historical and religious importance in the Middle Ages.
The current structure preserves traces of its different periods of construction: the nave, part of the transept and the bell tower on dome date from the 12th century, while the square bedside and its skeleton window are characteristic of the 15th century. The apse, probably ruined at that time, was replaced by a wall to the east. In the 19th century, chapels were added to the transept, and the facade was completely redone, including a turret staircase and a sacristy.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 12 April 1944, Saint-Maurice Church is now the property of the municipality of Lavoûte-sur-Loire. Its architecture thus combines Romanesque, Gothic and modern influences, reflecting stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs throughout the centuries. The building remains a valuable testimony to the religious and architectural heritage of the Haute-Loire.
