Origin and history

The Saint-Maurice church of Saint-Maurice-des-Champs is a religious building built in the 12th century. Located in the village of Saint-Maurice-des-Champs, Saône-et-Loire, it is representative of the Burgundy Romanesque architecture of this period. Its southern side portal, inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 15 October 1971, bears witness to its local heritage importance.

In the 12th century, rural churches like Saint-Maurice played a central role in the life of Burgundy communities. They served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for social and administrative activities. The region, marked by a growing agricultural economy and trade, saw these buildings become symbols of stability and faith.

The southern portal, the only explicitly protected element, illustrates the attention paid to the partial preservation of this heritage. The location of the church, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), suggests a correct geographical identification, although not perfect. Today, the building belongs to the municipality and its access (visit, rental or accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
