Origin and history

The church Saint-Mayeul-et-Saint-Pont de Saint-Pont, located in the Allier department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a religious building dating back to the 11th century. Mentioned in a Cluny cartular at that time, it was probably completed in the 12th century. Its initial architecture, marked by a nave and two sides, reflects this medieval period. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several transformations, notably in the 18th century with the addition of a sacristy, and in the 19th century, where it was enlarged and partially rebuilt.

In 1698, the church was described as entirely vaulted, with four bells in its bell tower. However, in the 18th century, it was considered too small for the needs of the parish. Sold as national property during the Revolution, it was bought by the mayor of Saint-Pont in 1810. Between 1842 and 1848, under the direction of architect Bonneton de Gannat, the church was enlarged by a span to the west and a false transept, while its bell tower was rebuilt. In 1928, the roof of the bell tower was redone, with tiles replaced by slates.

The building, now known as Saint-Mayeul and Saint-Pont, has been listed as historic monuments since December 26, 1980. It belongs to the municipality of Saint-Pont and bears witness to the architectural and historical evolutions of this region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. Its steeple, characteristic of its square base and octagonal tower, as well as its 19th century rebuilt vaults, make it a remarkable example of the local religious heritage.
