Origin and history

The church Saint-Médard d'Illeville-sur-Montfort, located in the department of Eure in Normandy, was built from the 13th century under the command of King Philippe-Auguste. This monument, marked by renovations in the 15th and 16th centuries, reflects medieval and reborn religious architecture. Its square-based bell tower and its initial dedication to Saint Philbert and Saint Blaise, before passing under the patronage of Saint Médard in 1809, make it an emblematic building of the region.

Around 1520 Louis XII handed over the church and his seigneurial rights to Illeville-sur-Montfort to the Chartreux of Rouen. This transition marked a period of monastic management, although the castle of Louis XII, formerly present, has now disappeared. The church houses remarkable elements such as a 15th century pietà, a cross path offered by Napoleon III, and ancient silks, bearing witness to his rich liturgical and artistic past.

The village of Illeville-sur-Montfort, crossed by ancient roads and equipped with a Roman villa, developed around this place of worship. The commune, rural and marked by a majority agricultural occupation, also retains a complementary heritage, such as an 18th century presbytery and a 16th century cemetery cross. These elements, combined with the Montfort Forest and the Risle Valley, highlight the historical and natural anchoring of the site.

Placed a historic monument in 1926, Saint-Médard Church remains a symbol of local community and religious life. Its cemetery, its century-old if and its calvary, registered since 1934, reinforces its heritage character. The local tradition still perpetuates today the feast of Saint Medard, honored every year by the inhabitants.
