Origin and history

The Saint-Médard de Saugues church, located in the Haute-Loire, is an ancient collegiate church dating back to the 12th century. Ranked a historic monument in 1840, it preserves traces of its early Romanesque architecture, notably in the masonries of the treasure hall and some capitals. Its current porch, with its wide brows, and the southern wall of the nave, date from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, during which time the building was enlarged.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the choir and nave were rebuilt in a flamboyant Gothic style, marked by broken arcades. A partial collapse in the 17th century imposed the reconstruction of the north wall, the vault and part of the choir. In 1873, the western facade, in the neo-Gothic style, was added with statues of Saint Roch and Saint Médard. In 1968, the vault of the choir collapsed again and was restored.

The church houses an altar with a gissant dedicated to Saint Benilde (1805-1862), brother of the canonized Christian schools in 1967, having lived his last years in Saugues. Two 19th-century stained glass windows, made by Charles Borie, illustrate the life and martyrdom of Saint Noël Chabanel, including a rare representation of a Huron, witness to the missionary ties of the time. The partially Romanesque bell tower was consolidated around 1920.

The successive protections (classification in 1840 and inscription in 1971) underline its heritage importance. The architectural changes reflect stylistic evolutions, from Romanesque origins to neo-Gothic additions, to classic 17th century elements. The building thus illustrates nearly nine centuries of local religious and artistic history.
